Level: B1 Intermediate
Focus: Speaking and Communication
Topic: Expressing Opinions

At B1 level, learners should be able to express an opinion and explain the reason behind it. Instead of giving very short answers such as
“I like it” or “I don’t agree”, they should be able to develop their ideas more clearly.
In this lesson, you will learn useful expressions for giving opinions and supporting them with reasons in everyday communication.
1. Giving an Opinion
2. Giving a Reason
A B1 answer usually becomes clearer and more complete when you explain
why you think something.
3. Short Conversation
Adam: Do you think online learning is better than classroom learning?
Sara: I think both can be useful, but I prefer classroom learning.
Adam: Why?
Sara: Because I can speak directly with the teacher and other students.
Adam: That’s true. I prefer online learning because it gives me more flexibility.
Sara: Yes, that’s definitely one of its advantages.
4. Language Focus
Opinion only
I think online classes are useful.
Opinion + reason
I think online classes are useful because students can study from home.
At B1 level, try to develop your answers instead of using only one short
sentence. Giving a reason makes your communication clearer and more natural.
5. Mini Practice
Complete the sentences with your own ideas.
- I think learning English is important because __________.
- In my opinion, living in a big city is __________ because __________.
- I prefer __________ to __________ because __________.
- From my point of view, social media __________.
- I believe people should __________ because __________.
6. Speaking Practice
Answer each question with an opinion and at least one reason.
- Is it better to study alone or with other people?
- Should people exercise every day?
- Is travelling important for young people?
- Do you prefer books or films?
- Is technology making our lives better?
Example Answer
Question:
Do you prefer books or films?
Answer:
I usually prefer films because they are more visual and easier to enjoy after a busy day. However, I think books often give us more detail.
